Ms. Mulatto aka Big Latto

"When Alyssa Stephens was in her early teens when she entered the local Atlanta rap scene, her dad, a car enthusiast, turned his ride into a moving advertisement for her career. “My daddy had a brand-new white Yukon truck,” she recalls, “and he wrapped my face on it, with my social media handles.”
Stephens had recently started taking her local performances as Miss Mulatto across state lines, showing off the skills she’d been honing since she was 10. Initially drawn to writing poetry as an elementary schooler, she switched to writing rhymes after her dad started bringing her along on rap video shoots for which he supplied the candy-painted cars.

Early Life

By 2015, when Stephens was 16, her touring and social promotion paid off when her Instagram caught the eyes of the creators of The Rap Game, a hip-hop competition show featuring Jermaine Dupri. Miss Mulatto signed on for the Lifetime show’s first season, and in February 2016 was crowned the winner.

"It was immediate growth,” she says. “Social media, shows, opportunities, partnerships — everything went through the roof.”

Career

In 2016, Stephens became a contestant on the Lifetime reality series The Rap Game, produced by Jermaine Dupri and Queen Latifah. The boot camp-style series followed young aspiring rappers in a competition against one another over a span of eight weeks. Mulatto, under the stage name "Miss Mulatto" at the time, was the overall winner of the competition. She was offered a recording contract from Dupri with So So Def Records but ultimately turned down the deal claiming it wasn't enough money, opting to be an independent artist.
In March 2020, it was officially announced that Mulatto signed with RCA Records. On April 23, 2020, Mulatto released the promotional single, "No Hook". On May 21, 2020, Mulatto released the promotional single, "He Say She Say". In July 2020, Mulatto recreated some of rapper Gucci Mane's album covers, starting with the The State vs. Radric Davis. Gucci reacted positively. Mulatto then revealed the release of her single titled "Muwop", featuring Gucci Mane, which was released on July 30. The song samples Mane's 2007 single, "Freaky Gurl". Mulatto made a cameo appearance in American rapper Cardi B's music video for her single "WAP", which was released on August 7, 2020.[13] On the same day, Mulatto was featured on NLE Choppa's single, "Make Em Say", taken from his album Top Shotta. On August 11, 2020, Mulatto was included on XXL's 2020 Freshman Class. On August 12, 2020, Mulatto announced the release of her debut project released via RCA Records titled, Queen of Da Souf, which was released on August 21, 2020. The project was preceded by the singles; "B*tch from da Souf" (Remix) and "Muwop" featuring Gucci Mane, as well as the promotional singles, "No Hook" and "He Say She Say". The album peaked at number 44 on the Billboard Top 200.
